Derived from the fusion of different worlds, the Peugeot Prologue HYmotion4 concept car lifts a corner of the veil on a new type of cross-over. Anticipating future trends, this concept is a formidable laboratory of innovative ideas at many different levels: its architecture, its style, its interior ambience, its modularity, its original high-tech equipment, and also the next generation HDi FAP hybrid technology called "HYmotion4" including 4 wheel drive. With a diesel engine driving the front wheels and an electric motor powering the rear wheels, this spacious yet compact 147 kW (200 bhp) car generates a particularly low level of CO2 emissions: 109 g/km in the combined cycle, or zero in electric only mode!

The Peugeot Prologue HYmotion4 is a pioneering concept car heralding the arrival of a compact and spacious cross-over in the Peugeot range. It is positioned at the crossroads between different categories and body shapes...

This concept car also demonstrates progress made towards an ambitious and promising goal: an electric/ diesel power plant with a dual transmission system which opens up the possibility of 4 wheel drive: a technology known as "HYmotion4".

In a sense, a "full hybrid" vehicle:

= Hybrid on account of its exterior architecture, with a body carrying SUV, MPV and hatchback genes...,
= Hybrid on account of its style, which blends power and protection, strength and elegance, leisure and prestige with a real sense of dynamism,
= Hybrid on account of its unexpected interior, which combines the ambience of a top-of-the-range hi-tech Coupé with practical and efficient modularity.
= Hybrid on account of its dynamic specification since, thanks to the Marque's expertise and the technologies employed, this "tall single compartment" vehicle is capable of ride qualities worthy of a saloon and still offering an original driving experience.
= Hybrid on account of its technology, electric (at the rear) and HDi FAP diesel (at the front), both engines operate independently or together for a maximum power of 147 kW (200 bhp) and a maximum torque of 300 Nm at the front and 200 Nm at the rear.
= Hybrid on account of its transmission which allows for 4 wheel drive, combining safety and driveability with a particularly efficient environmental performance (combined fuel consumption of 4.1 litres/100 km and CO2 emissions of only 109 g/km, or zero in electric only mode).

The Peugeot Prologue HYmotion4 concept car proposes innovative, high-performance solutions all ensuring maximum versatility. It offers a unique blend of driveability, safety, adventure and originality, while at the same time showing respect for the environment. An environmentally-friendly hybrid, in step with the times and aligned with the aspirations of its many potential customers.

Genesis of ideas: exploiting benefits to the full
In terms of new concepts, Peugeot has always been a hugely creative car manufacturer. In the recent past, this has resulted in numerous concept cars with avant-garde architectures, as well as innovations which were later adopted on production vehicles. All these concepts, however, were clearly aimed at users in search of driving pleasure and the very best that technology has to offer. The creativity of stylists and engineers has always given rise to strong, modern and distinctive concepts in the Peugeot range, offering multiple benefits in terms of motoring enjoyment and day-to-day practicality. Examples include the CC (coupe + cabriolet), the SW (intelligence and brightness in the world of the estate), or the 307 and 308 (modern hatchbacks with a semi-tall architecture).

Convinced that the future of the motor car will necessarily involve the hybridisation of many different concepts, and helped in this by technological innovations, Peugeot teams are currently working on an innovative vehicle destined to conquer new markets. The Peugeot Prologue HYmotion4 concept car perfectly illustrates this approach.

Alert to global sociological and economic trends, the Peugeot Prologue HYmotion4 concept car anticipates the expectations and preferences of potential customers. These customers will be aware of world issues but also anxious to preserve their achievements and values. By positioning itself at the point of convergence of several existing body shapes, therefore combining the numerous benefits of each style, this concept car explores new territory, proposing a modern and versatile offer with a high level specification based on advanced technology.

Style: power that protects
Peugeot styling has always had a strong and dynamic personality that is easily recognisable regardless of a particular range or successive generations of models. It is nonetheless constantly changing. Developments come to the fore, some more marked than others, according to the life cycle of the vehicle and, above all, its category.

Here, exterior style successfully evokes the vehicle's highly innovative content.

In keeping with the car's overall design, its style expresses itself through original proportions and new vectors of balance.

At the front, the Peugeot genes adapt to the car's generous volumes while setting it apart from what has gone before. The streamlined front headlamps immediately call to mind a renewed, dynamic and reassuring expressiveness. The single air intake helps create the effect of a high-status off-roader, with a front grille reminiscent of the world of the SUV. The lower front panel strengthens this "off road" appeal with its black lacquered bumper following the contours of the lights.

From the side, the rising window line has an upper section enhanced by chrome. This accentuates the imposing height of the waist line and, thanks to the majestic 18'' wheels and sculpted wings, contributes to the strong sense of robustness which spreads through the entire vehicle.

At the rear, the attractively rounded wings are moulded to the shape of rear lights, here given a particularly hi-tech finish. The originality of this design adds to the perception that the vehicle is firmly planted on the road. Here too, the presence of a "hobby" tailgate and large black protective mouldings in the lower section, illustrate the "Outdoor" spirit of this concept car.

In the final analysis, the style of the car creates multiple impressions: inner strength, contained power, controlled dynamism...

This protective style, rewarding and reassuring, appeals not only because of the richness of these connotations, but also because of the new light in which it casts the motor car. A breath of fresh air enhanced by the "polar" grey body colour which has a textured finish reminiscent of the skin of an imaginary reptile.

Interior ambience: a strong statement
Continuing the theme of a hybridisation of styles, the passenger compartment becomes a new source of surprise and delight for the car's occupants.

Within the spacious design of the car's body, the driver's seat evokes the world of the prestige coupé and bears a strong resemblance to an aircraft cockpit. An uncluttered fascia panel, controls easily within hand's reach and an ergonomic centre console bordering the "pilot's" territory, are all combined with a dominant raised driving position: the driver, given VIP treatment, can enjoy the distinctive driving experience to which he aspires.

These qualities are echoed throughout the passenger compartment.

Hi-Tech refinement
Distinctive materials are used to emphasise the sense of fusion and explore new avenues of expression. Smooth leather is accompanied by full-grain leather, textured to represent the bodywork and its reference to the skin of an imaginary reptile. This creates a subtle contrast with the synthetic fur of an improbable animal covering the centre of the seat cushions.

The general ambience of light, bright grey, harmonises with the exterior colour, while turquoise visible stitching, echoing the displays and pictograms of the instrument panels, adds zest to this theme.

The overall effect is one of unity, both natural and clinical, animal and mechanical, physical and refined.

"Multiflex" interior: undreamt-of versatility

While giving the driver the promise of renewed driving pleasure, the Peugeot Prologue HYmotion4 concept car also has much to offer its other occupants.

They too will enjoy the passenger compartment with its original atmosphere, bathed in generous volumes of light dispensed by the immense panoramic glass roof. They also benefit from numerous storage spaces, particularly in the rear floor and the generous front centre console.

Providing added security for the front passenger, a solid handle on the centre console, helps to find the ideal position for a comfortable journey.

Thanks to its intelligent "Multiflex" interior, the Peugeot Prologue HYmotion4 can be converted to offer a very generous load carrying capacity. The lower tailgate flap, or "hobby", and the upper tailgate, open to reveal a boot in which the floor height can be adjusted very easily according to what needs to be carried.

From the boot, a special control can be activated to fold the second row seats instantly, as if by magic. Also benefiting from an ingenious folding front passenger seat, the Peugeot Prologue HYmotion4 offers a perfectly flat floor from the lower tailgate flap "hobby" to the fascia panel. This makes available a huge interior space that is very easy to load.

Also on the inside of the car, the hybridisation of concepts paves the way for undreamt-of possibilities...

Driving assistance: simple hi-tech equipment for enhanced safety and driving pleasure

Comfortably installed behind the wheel, the driver will discover equipment that makes passing reference to the world of aviation.

To ensure that the driver's eyes never have to leave the road, essential information is projected onto a retractable transparent display, similar to that of a fighter plane, which cleverly extends from the instrument panel binnacle. The settings for this Head-Up Display system can be adjusted by means of "Toggle Switches". These switches, placed at the top of the centre console, contribute stylistically to the interior ambience. They also control another original item of equipment: the "Distance Alert". As its name implies, this system helps the driver to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, according to speed.

Another item of equipment gives the driver peace of mind: Measurement of Available Space (MPD), which measures the size of the space during parking and indicates whether or not parking is possible. Similarly, the Electric Parking Brake (FSE) coupled with Hill Assist, facilitates manoeuvring and, takes the place of a manual hand brake, optimising the available space.

Finally, a new generation satellite navigation system helps to guide the driver along his chosen route. This "WIPCom 3D" combines all the benefits of existing satellite navigation systems proposed by the Marque (particularly the new "WIPCom" featured on the new 407). It also includes a Juke-box function, combined with a hard disc, the Peugeot Emergency system (which alerts the emergency services and pinpoints the vehicle's location in the event of an accident), a GSM function and a USB connector... while new functions are also in evidence, such as the DVD player, the Bluetooth® system and a graphic interface which shows city buildings in "full 3D".

In terms of "vehicle dynamics", the ESP featured on the Peugeot Prologue HYmotion4 is coupled with a "Grip Control" system to ensure optimal traction. This "improved ASR" will deploy the car's 4 wheel drive to best effect when road conditions are less than perfect.

The HYmotion4: taking the hybrid concept to its limits
HYmotion4 technology, a magic formula that's elementary nonetheless: "Electric+HDi = 147 kW (200 bhp)+300 and 200Nm = 4 wheel drive+CO2 emissions of 109 g/km"

The Peugeot Prologue HYmotion4 concept car incorporates an incredibly innovative power train: HYmotion4 technology.

This name represents the hybridisation of a traditional engine (a 2.0 litre HDi FAP with a power of 120 kW / 163 bhp) with an electric motor offering a maximum capacity of 27 kW (37 bhp). This unit is characterised by an original mechanical layout, since the HDi engine is situated in its usual place under the bonnet and drives the front wheels, while the electric motor, placed at the rear under the boot floor, drives the rear wheels .

Therefore, there are no mechanical components between the front and the rear, everything being controlled electronically ("by wire"), allowing optimisation of space in the passenger compartment.

The end result is a 4-wheel drive vehicle offering reduced fuel consumption in the combined cycle of 4.1 litres/100 km and CO2 emissions of 109 g/km!

None of which detracts from the car's performance, since with a maximum power of 147 kW (200 bhp) and a maximum torque of 300 Nm at the front and 200 Nm at the rear, acceleration and in-gear acceleration are at the level of what could be obtained with a single 2.2 litre HDi FAP dual-turbo engine.

Here too, the hybridisation of technologies makes it possible to combine the benefits of a roomy car with 4-wheel drive, while at the same time offering environmentally-friendly credentials.

HDi FAP hybrid: research goes on
To tackle the problem of greenhouse gas emissions, and with the prospect of fuel prices rising ever higher, the Peugeot Marque has made the reduction of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions a key facet of its product policy.

Already today, Peugeot is making a real contribution to the PSA Peugeot Citroën group's position as a world leader on the market of vehicles emitting less than 120 g/km of CO2.

To retain its leadership, the group has announced that it is working on a range of different technologies, including:

= Large-scale "micro-hybridisation" with a STOP & START system, which will equip more than a million of the group's vehicles by 2011.
= HDi hybrid technology, which combines an HDi diesel engine with a particulate emission filter (FAP), with STOP & START and also with an electric motor operating in parallel to the diesel engine. This technology breaks with the past and allows gains in fuel consumption and emissions in the order of 35 % compared to a traditional diesel engine which is already highly efficient in thermodynamic terms (fuel consumption is reduced by 30 % compared to a petrol engine of the same capacity).

Several technological demonstrators have enabled the group to develop and increase its experience in this diesel hybrid technology.

These demonstrators have capitalised on the group's historic advance in the field of electric cars and, naturally, on its widely acclaimed expertise in the field of diesel engines featuring HDi FAP technology. The HDi hybrid therefore combines the exceptional efficiency of a HDi FAP diesel engine, here used in its optimum operating phase, with the addition of an electric motor particularly well suited to urban driving.

= January 2006 saw the unveiling of a 307 Hybrid HDi equipped with a 1.6 litre HDi FAP 66 kW (~ 90 bhp) engine and an electric motor offering a maximum power of 23 kW (31 bhp). Its fuel consumption in the combined cycle was 3.4 litres/100 km equating to CO2 emissions of 90 g/km for a level of performance equivalent to that of a 1.6 litre HDi 80 kW (~ 110 bhp) engine,
= In March 2006, with a view to offering cars that are both attractive and environmentally-friendly and taking the notion of driving freedom to a new level, a Peugeot 307 CC Hybrid HDi was presented. This car features a 1.6 litre HDi FAP 80 kW (~ 110 bhp) engine and an electric motor providing a maximum power of 31 kW (42 bhp), giving the vehicle a fuel consumption in the combined cycle of 4.1 litres/100 km and CO2 emissions of 109 g/km, with a level of performance equivalent to that of the 2.0 litre HDi FAP 100 kW (~ 136 bhp) engine,
= In September 2007, a new step was taken in terms of system performance and the optimisation of components with a view to possible industrialisation. The 308 Hybrid HDi 1.6 litre HDi FAP 80 kW (~ 110 bhp) engine and its electric motor delivering a maximum power of 23 kW (31 bhp) offered a combined cycle fuel consumption of 3.4 litres/100 km and CO2 emissions of 90g/km.

The Peugeot Prologue HYmotion4 concept car constitutes a new and decisive step towards the marketing of this innovation.

This car's technology represents a major advance in terms of customer benefits.

Firstly it benefits from experience acquired from previous technological demonstrators, keeping the same high level of environmental efficiency (a 35 % improvement compared to that obtained with a 2.2 litre HDi FAP dual-turbo engine).

Secondly, it offers a level of performance of the highest order thanks to its potential power of 147 kW. Finally, its innovative design allows the possibility of 4 wheel drive, benefiting safety and driveability, with no adverse effect on the design of the engine compartment or the interior passenger space.

BMW presents the ideal combination of state-of-the-art security standards with the adaptability of a sporting four-wheel drive vehicle. The new BMW X5 Security guarantees effective and tailor-made protection from criminal attacks and other hazards. Based on the successful Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) BMW X5, the new BMW X5 Security has room for up to five passengers and provides a superior drive train and chassis technology, which allows drivers to master even challenging situations and terrain with confidence. Due to this combination, the new BMW X5 Security is unique in the security vehicle segment. It meets all challenges of day-to-day traffic as well as to situations that require special protection and flexible reactions.

Accelerating from naught to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds.

The new BMW X5 Security has a strong 261 kW/355 hp V8 engine. The large, 4.8 liter eight-cylinder powerplant mobilizes a maximum torque of 475 Nm at 3,400 rpm. Accelerating from naught to 100 km/h in only 7.5 seconds, the BMW X5 Security's top speed is limited electronically to 210 km/h. In addition to the engine performance the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system ensures dynamic and superior thrust at all times. The constantly, electronically controlled all-wheel drive is networked via DSC Dynamic Stability Control to variably distribute the drive power between front and rear wheels. This way, xDrive promotes dynamic driving and on-road stability as well as off-road traction.

The new BMW X5 Security is the only vehicle of its segment to meet the requirements of the VR4 ballistic protection level. Its security options, which include armored passenger and baggage compartments as well as safety glazing, have been specially developed for this model and tested as part of the product development process. The integration of protective components has been taken into consideration during the development of the BMW X5 model and establishes ideal prerequisites for equipping the BMW X5 Security with highly effective security technology ex works.

The BMW Security concept: More than thirty years' experience.

Only few international car manufacturers have their own security vehicle engineering tradition. For more than thirty years, BMW has been one of them, offering customers a profound experience that guarantees reliable and expert vehicle and passenger safety solutions. All active and passive safety aspects have been taken into account and effectively combined to create a holistic synthesis. The safety concept F.I.R.S.T. (Fully Integrated Road Safety Technology), which is applied to all BMW vehicles, is the cornerstone of this approach. Based on this, the safety level of the protective measures of BMW Security vehicles can be optimized to suit individual customer requirements.

The professional protection concept of the new BMW X5 Security focuses on threats posed by criminal actions such as robbery, kidnapping or carjacking. These crimes are predominantly random acts. Most attackers do not target the passengers, but either their valuable possessions or the vehicle itself. BMW X5 Security provides extensive protection from such attacks.

Official certificate after particularly extensive tests.

The vehicle's armored passenger compartment is an essential part of the protection concept. It is bulletproof and safely withstands attacks with handguns up to caliber .44 Magnums, including caliber .357 Magnums or 9 mm Lugers. Accordingly, the BMW X5 Security complies with the requirements of the VR4 ballistic protection level. Testing and certification of the vehicle to internationally recognized European standards DIN EN 1063 and DIN EN 1522/23-1 was carried out by the Beschussamt Mellrichtstadt, an official German ballistics authority. BMW deliberately requested ballistic tests that exceeded conventional requirements. In addition to the stipulated firing angles of 90° and 45°, the tests included real-life scenarios including different long-range firing situations. The vehicle was certified accordingly.

Superior protection is afforded by special features such as components and panels which are made from special high-performance fiber-reinforced material. This material is used in the side panels, the roof, the front footwell and the rear. Some parts are also reinforced by bullet-proof steel for enhanced protection. Circumferential safety glazing with a 22 mm thickness withstands attacks with impact weapons and is also bullet resistant to VR4 ballistic protection level. The windows are reinforced with an additional polycarbonate layer that offers passengers protection from shattered glass.

The BMW X5 Security also provides complete protection behind the rear seating area. Therefore, the trunk can be used as a safe storage area. The two-part trunk lid is fully armored. The maximum vehicle payload exceeds the 500 kilogram mark.

The BMW X5 Security is equipped with an intercom system and an assault alarm, which allows communication with people outside of the car without opening doors or windows. If the assault alarm is triggered, all doors and windows are locked automatically and acoustic as well as optical alarm signals are activated. The alarm control elements are situated near the cup holders on the center console and are subtly concealed below a flexible cover.

With the help of high-performance camera systems the driver can easily monitor the area in front and behind the vehicle. A rear-view camera transmits an image to the iDrive control display situated in the instrument panel to allow the driver to assess the vehicle's distance to obstacles without the need to look behind. Side view system cameras integrated into the bumpers provide a detailed view of the area in front of the vehicle. They also transmit an image to the control display. This system helps detect crossing traffic when exiting multi-story car parks or narrow driveways.

On the safe side: Maximum protection off the production line.

In contrast to retrofitted security features, all components used for security vehicles that are manufactured by BMW are perfectly adapted to suit the model they are deployed in. The armored passenger compartment for example provides seamless protection of the entire interior. This way, critical areas such as door joints or transitional sections of the pillars safely withstand bullets or fragments and prevent them from penetrating into the passenger compartment.

The BMW X5 Security chassis is perfectly adapted to handle the extra weight. In order to achieve this, special measures were taken. Among others, specific chassis components such as suspension and dampers were integrated and the chassis management software was adapted to suit the specific requirements of security vehicles. Moreover, the BMW X5 Security is equipped with BMW Safety Tires. Even during complete loss of tire pressure- as a result of a shooting or after driving over sharp objects, for example - the tires still function. A fully loaded vehicle can thus continue safely for up to 50 km at speeds of up to 80 km/h.

Another benefit of the ex-works protection concept is the fact that all security measures are integrated without having any impact on the vehicle design. Even to the expert's eye, security vehicles manufactured by BMW are virtually indistinguishable from corresponding production models. This meets customers' wishes for discretion and provides extra safety for passengers.

Driving dynamics and comfort at the level of production models.

In addition to the outstanding security levels provided by the BMW X5 Security, the vehicle offers a multitude of impressive advantages such as maximum comfort, superior handling and an extremely sporting driving performance. Equipped with the intelligent all-wheel xDrive, the five-seater vehicle is not dependent on roads and expertly masters difficult off-road territory just as confidently.

The high-quality drive train technology and chassis management, which includes all elements of the BMW X5 production model, provides perfect conditions for safely mastering even extreme driving maneuvers and confidently evading any hazardous situations whenever required. The all-wheel drive and DSC Dynamic Stability Control are all networked via the Integrated Chassis Management (ICM), which allows an extremely precise drive power distribution to suit the driving situation at hand. Taking into account the data transmitted by the DSC sensors, the xDrive quickly shifts drive power to the axle with better grip. When dynamically navigating bends, the interaction between the xDrive and the DSC counteract the vehicles' tendency to oversteer or understeer in bends. Due to the situation-oriented, variable force distribution between the front and the rear wheels, DSC intervenes by applying the brakes separately on each wheel only if this is required by extreme situations.

The DSC version that was developed for the BMW X5 also includes a so called anti-fading support by setting off any decrease in brake power at extremely high temperatures by increasing brake forces accordingly. Moderate build-up of brake forces, in turn, also enhances brake standby in situations which may require spontaneous deceleration. Regular dry braking optimizes the performance of the brakes in the wet, while the start-off assistant facilitates the process of setting off on an uphill gradient.

The DSC system's range of functions include the special DTC Dynamic Traction Control mode. This mode is activated by a press of a button and raises the thresholds for intervention in the engine and brakes, allowing the vehicle to set off smoothly on loose snow or sand. Last, but certainly not least, DTC promotes an even more sporting style of motoring and navigating bends. In order to aid motorists navigating difficult terrain , the vehicle is equipped with Hill-Descent-Control (HDC). Networked via the DSC, the system allows a controlled descent of hills by means of automatically controlled braking interventions. Even steep off-road sections can be mastered safely and at constant speed.

Standard features of the BMW X5 Security: Adaptive Drive and Active Steering.

Boosting an even higher level of confidence in mastering challenging driving situations, the new BMW X5 Security provides Adaptive Drive as a standard option. The combination of active anti-roll stabilization and variable damper adjustment allows precise control of body roll and damping exactly as required at all times.

Using sensors, Adaptive Drive permanently monitors and gathers data on the road speed of the vehicle, its steering angle, forward and lateral acceleration, body and wheel acceleration, as well as height levels. Using this information, the system controls both the swivel motors on the anti-roll bars and the electromagnetic damper valves.

The FlexRay high-speed data transmission system is being used for the first time for fast and reliable coordination of all Adaptive Drive functions. BMW is the first manufacturer in the world to use FlexRay technology in production vehicles.

The new BMW X5 Security is available with Active Steering as a standard option. This system offers exactly the right steering ratio at all speeds and steering angle. Up to a speed of approximately 90 km/h steering behavior is predominantly direct. Moreover, parking is facilitated by the fact that is takes only two turns to proceed from lock to lock. At higher speeds, Active Steering transmission is more indirect, enhancing the directional stability of the vehicle and, accordingly, its driving comfort.

Active Steering is combined with Servotronic for better steering comfort through reduced steering forces dependent on the driving speed. As part of DSC Dynamic Stability Control, Active Steering is also networked via the ICM and actively stabilizes the vehicle when oversteering in a bend or during particularly demanding braking maneuvers. When applying the brakes on surfaces with a varying frictional coefficient (split-friction braking), for example, Active Steering generates a precise but discreet counter-steering effect to prevent the vehicle from swerving out of control. This way, even challenging driving situations can be mastered with maximum dynamics and utmost confidence.

Active and passive safety: BMW X5 is the ideal foundation.

Not only in terms of drive chain and chassis technology, but also in the areas of active and passive safety, the new BMW X5 Security benefits from substantial progress in development that was achieved up until the launch of the new version of the SAV production model. The torsional body stiffness, the arrangement of deformation zones, the crash safety of the passenger compartment and the high degree of safety features including their central control, the brake and lighting system have been significantly improved on the previous model.

The interior of the BMW X5 is equipped with frontal and hip/thorax airbags as well as curtain/head airbags at the side as standard features. These airbags inflate from the A-pillar covers and from the roof lining to protect passengers in the first and the second row of seats from injury. The BMW X5 is equipped with three-point inertia-reel belts on all seats. These restraint systems come with belt force limiters as well as with a belt latch tensioner for the front seats. ISOFIX child seat fasteners on the rear seats are featured as standard. In the event of an impending rollover, rollover sensors activate the curtain airbags and belt latch tensioners. Networked with DSC Dynamic Stability Control, these sensors guarantee an early and situation-related operation of the system. Due to this extensive package of measures for enhanced passenger safety, the BMW X5 meets the most stringent crash safety requirements. The BMW SAV was the first vehicle of its segment to be awarded five stars, the best result in the Euro-NCAP crash test.

The high-performance brake system in the new BMW X5 is supported by the wide range of DSC functions to ensure excellent stopping power in every situation. Inner-vented discs on all four wheels take up braking energy with maximum efficiency. Brake disc diameter on the BMW X5 Security is 365 millimeters at the front and 345 millimeters at the rear.

In conjunction with the Bi-Xenon headlights, the BMW X5 Security is also available with an optional adaptive bend-lighting system. The adaptive bend-lighting system adapts the illumination of the road to the corresponding steering angle. The headlights follow the progression of the bend, thus improving visibility of the stretch of road in front of the vehicle. In conjunction with the adaptive bend-lighting system, the vehicle can be equipped with an optional turning lights integrated into the fog lamps. With every turn, the fog lamps' light beam is guided to the side by a reflector to clearly illuminate the road ahead in the new direction taken by the turning vehicle.

BMW X5 Security: Extraordinary SAV, unique security vehicle

Safety, dynamics, protection - the new BMW X5 Security provides it all at premium level. It stands for both the extraordinary characteristics of a sporting BMW four-by-four and for the manufacturer's outstanding competence in the development and engineering of security vehicles. The BMW X5 Security imparts a feeling of confidence to the driver and a feeling of safety and comfort for the passengers, both of which is combined with a discreet appearance which helps maintain the passengers' anonymity.

Similar to the production model, the new BMW X5 Security is distinguished by its superior driving dynamics and impressive traction. Moreover, this model provides the comprehensive functional range of the successful BMW SAV model including five seats and the adaptive luggage compartment. The only vehicle of its segment to be certified to VR4 ballistic protection level, the BMW X5 Security combines sheer driving pleasure with the versatility of state-of-the-art safety engineering. This vehicle is prepared for mastering or preventing hazardous situations in more ways than one. The BMW X5 Security is both, an extraordinary SAV that is tailored to customers with a special focus on protection, and a unique security vehicle for a wide variety of applications and a high degree of day-to-day functionality.

BMW security vehicles: Development and engineering to standards of excellence.

All security vehicles are wholly manufactured by BMW to strict BMW quality assurance specifications for development and production. As with the production vehicle, the BMW X5 Security is manufactured in Spartanburg, South Carolina, USA. The protection components are integrated to BMW process specifications at the manufacturer's plant in Toluca (Mexico).

At the same time, BMW provides its customers with extensive support all over the world, ranging from discreet consultancy to comprehensive service and part supply. All security vehicles are designed to allow maintenance and repair in regular BMW branches. The service range includes a corporate pool of security and maximum security vehicles.

In addition to its customer service, BMW offers special Security Driver Training sessions. BMW has been conducting these training sessions for more than twenty years. Drivers have a choice of different levels of intensity depending on the prior knowledge of the participants. They are carried out in different locations all over the world and are conducted by highly skilled experts. The training provides an extensive insight into the theory as well as practical vehicle handling.

The first all-new Lotus since the iconic Lotus Elise made its debut in 1995, Lotus Evora enters the sports car market as currently the world's only mid-engined 2+2. Powered by a Lotus-tuned 3.5-litre V6 engine producing 280 PS, and weighing just 1350 kg, the Lotus Evora promises breathtaking performance. During preliminary testing around the famous Nürburgring, the Lotus chassis engineers report that it is extremely agile and great fun to drive - even when clad with the full development disguise that hid the beautiful lines from the prying motor-industry paparazzi.

In addition to its excellent performance and exemplary handling, the Lotus Evora offers a more refined ownership experience than Lotus's existing smaller four-cylinder models. Its elegantly styled cabin is elegantly trimmed and its equipment list includes contemporary features such as an advanced touch-screen multi-media system and electric power-fold door mirrors.

Because one of the roles of the Lotus Evora is to attract new customers to the Lotus brand, much attention has been paid to its ease of use. Wider, taller door apertures and narrower sills make getting in and out of the cabin a less athletic undertaking than it is in Lotus's smaller sports cars (the Elise, Exige, Europa and 2-Eleven), while the design of the cabin itself will accommodate two 99th percentile (6ft 5in tall) American males in the front seats.

The 'convenience factor' of the Lotus Evora extends to less obvious areas of the car. For instance, beneath the skin the entire front-end structure is a high tech aluminium sacrificial modular unit, attached to the main extruded aluminium tub. This modular unit is designed to deform for maximum safety, and to reduce repair costs in the event of a frontal impact.

The Lotus Evora has been designed with global automotive regulations in mind, and future derivatives are planed, these including amongst others, a convertible.

The Lotus Evora will be hand crafted and built on a dedicated new assembly line within Lotus's advanced manufacturing facility at Hethel in the east of England; capacity limitations will restrict production to approximately 2000 cars a year, ensuring the dynamic new sports car's rarity and exclusivity.

Mike Kimberley, CEO of Group Lotus plc, has this to say about the exciting new model: "The Lotus Evora is the biggest milestone Lotus has achieved since the Elise was born 13 years ago and is part of our bold five year strategic plan, which includes the introduction of new cars and technologies to many more markets around the world. The Lotus Evora also represents Lotus core values of performance through light weight and efficiency and proves that you can have phenomenal performance, fuel efficiency elegant design and practicality all in a class leading mid-engine 2+2 sportscar, which will meet global safety and homologation standards"

Mike Kimberley continues, "Looking to the future, we will continue to research, develop and produce lighter, more efficient vehicles which are linked to our extensive and well-regarded work on all aspects of future fuels, alternative engines and electric and hybrid vehicle solutions for the future. We all have an environmental responsibility to future generations and the Lotus Evora is another example where Lotus is seen to make significant steps towards improving the efficiency and sustainability of the motorcar keeping Britain at the forefront of the high technology motor industry." ...........Read more >
